A place-based science class rooted in the Gulf Coast
Conservation & Resources is a hands-on science class for homeschool and virtual school families who want their children to learn where they live—not just what’s in a textbook.
This course is grounded in local ecology and ecosystems of the Gulf Coast and Lower Alabama, focusing on land, water, plants, and wildlife that are often missing from standard science curricula. Students explore topics like invasive species, land management, watershed health, and the natural systems that support our bay.
Learning happens outdoors and through experience. We talk about why jubilees occur, how oysters filter and protect our water, and what makes our estuary one of the most biologically rich in the country. Students learn to identify animal tracks, observe local birds and calls, and test water quality using real tools—practicing citizen science in a meaningful way.
Classes take place in a forested environment and include nature journaling, observation, movement, and inquiry-based exploration. The goal is connection—helping students understand what makes this region special and how they can play a role in protecting it.
This class is an invitation to look closer, ask better questions, and build a relationship with the place we call home.

The best way to learn about the wild and wonderful place we live is to immerse yourself.

Small class sizes and hands-on exploration allow children the time and freedom to truly engage with the natural world. At Little Roots, learning is personal, immersive, and rooted in real experience.
Class runs from 12:30-3:00
